tuning out
crackle, shackle and goddamn
we’re falling, sinking
faster than lead soldiers
speeding like light through black space

the flowers that I painted for you
have begun to wilt
and the paint drips off the palate
steady as the pulse of the city
until it is blank
as if I never loved it
